Vliegclub Rotterdam

That's where my flying career started. The VCR is situated at zestienhoven, the airport of Rotterdam. It was in the early afternoon of the 17th of March 1984 when I had my very first flight. It was in the PH-SRP, a Piper Warrior 4 seater. Joep Wessels was the instructor and we flew from Rotterdam- Airport to the grass strip of Midden-Zeeland. In those days I lived in Voorburg, a 1 hour drive by bike, 5 minutes by plane.. A year and 45 hours flying time later I had my PPL. Most of the training was done on a Robin 2112. Quick Airways

After obtaining my CPL and IR on a Piper Warrior I heard about 2 guys from the VCR who decided to get a type rating on the Piper Chieftain with Quick Airways.

Rijnmond Air Services

In 1988 I started with Rijnmond Air Services, in short, the RAS. Strange enough I couldn't find their web site. Maybe it's because they are now part of the Quick Airways group.

Cargolux

In 2004 Transavia offered the opportunity to take a full year unpaid leave. That's when I started looking for a 1 year contract job as captain B737 in the Far East. I just came back from Bali (Indonesia) where we had a wet lease for Air Paradise. We flew out of Bali to Perth and Taipei. Back in Amsterdam I got my new flight schedule. Spain, Turkey, Greece.... I had been doing that for the last 15 years and I had another 15 years to go! A colleague who was also looking for a contract job told me that there was an interesting one on the Parc Aviation web site. A self-sponsored Boeing 747-400 type rating followed by a 1 year contract with a company in Europe. The company appeared to be Cargolux in Luxembourg. An assessment in Dublin, a meeting with the Chief Pilot and a few weeks later the training started. That year with Cargolux was fantastic. Flying the Queen of the Skies is really special. Put her on a 50 X 100 football field, the wings will stick out 7,5 meters on each side (wingspan 64.9 mtr) and the nose and tail will be in the penalty area (length 70,7 mtr)... For those who have flown the 737NG the transition isn't difficult at all. A lot of the instruments are the same in the 747. It's just a few weeks computer based training, some sessions paper tiger and about 11 simulator sessions and you're ready for the test. As Cargolux has its own simulator and a TRTO the whole training was done in-house. I was lucky to have a very good and experienced instructor who was training another Cargolux captain to become simulator instructor as well. He was very well prepared for every simulator session. The training was very well organized and instructors were always available, sometimes even during the weekends.

Today I have accrued more than 19.237 hours (that's 801 days...) of which most of them are on the Boeing 737 and 747.
